Koroni
Located 50 km south of Kalamata, Koroni is a mid size harbor village in Messinia province. Its picturesque setting on the tip of the last Peloponnesian finger explains its importance during Venetian and Ottoman times. Its majestic castle was a strategic lookout for the Naval rulers of the Eastern Mediterranean and part of "The Eyes of Venice". But, of course, as almost everything in Greece, it was founded in ancient, archaic times and received its name from the mythical princess Corone.
Today it is a pleasant, if not sleepy Peloponnesian harbor village that wakes up during summer months to host inidividual tourists from mainland Greece (Athens) and Europe.
There are no large hotels and no dominant package tour groups. Most of the tourists travel individually and stay in holiday homes.
Koroni is your quintessential Greek coastal village. During the summer months, there are concerts at the harbor and at the castle. Every Sunday there is a farmers' market.
Walk up to the Venetian castle ruins towering over the village with its small, pleasant nunnery. Sit and rest with the nuns in their beautiful gardens and don't forget to try their Loukoumi. Most importantly, walk the castle area and enjoy the spectacular vistas round the whole finger. It is an amazing and magic place.
